FAQs

  1. Where do I look for apartments that contain 3-5 bedrooms?
    • You can begin by looking at apartment websites online and filtering how many bedrooms would be preferred. It’s tough to narrow down all the places that do offer them since there aren’t many but many property websites will give you an option of how many bedrooms you are looking for as well as floor plans and prices.
  2. How does the application process work in the Green and Orchard Park? Which one is more convenient for me to live in?
    • If you have priority to live in the dorms again or the Green or Orchard Park there is  a high chance you’ll end up getting it. To look over the application, schedule an appointment with a peer advisor (look through our linktree). The Green and dorms normally do quarterly payments, if you receive financial aid the university will automatically take your housing expenses before you receive a refund. Normally, you would have to:
      • Visit the myHousing Portal
      • Complete the Family and Graduate Housing Application
      • Check for an email notification from studenthousing@ucdavis.edu
      • Review your lease offer on the myHousing Portal within 48 hours*
      • Monitor email for notification your lease is available for signing*
      • Complete the Lease Signing process via the myHousing Portal
      •  Lease terms for Orchard Park accommodate for quarter and semester programs. 3. When moving off campus, do I only get charged for rent? Are there any other utilities I should worry about?
    • You get charged for rent, utilities whether that be trash, water, and internet. PGE usually gets charged separately but each property differs. Usually rent includes rent, water, trash, and sewage but it is up to you to pay for PGE and wifi if your rent does not include these.
  4. I want to live close to campus, where should I start looking?
    • We have seen many students gravitate towards west Davis apartments and central Davis. Many students opt specifically for the area of Sycamore lane as well but an important thing to keep in mind is that the closer you live to campus the more expensive it might be.
  5. Having a contract taken over?
    • This would mean you are subleasing your room/apartment to someone else, you can post your listing on facebook groups and our Community Housing Listing (https://chl.ucdavis.edu/).
  6. Where in Davis, do they offer free or low cost parking?
  7. What should I start budgeting for?
    • Budget the financial aid refund you receive, if any. This will help you pay rent and utility expenses. Many students also get a campus job as hours will be catered towards your schedule but will also allow you to make extra money and be able to pay for certain things and budget. Overall, it is good to be mindful of what you spend on.
  8. How to fill out an application to apply for a set apartment?
    • Schedule an appointment with a peer advisor on our linktree.
  9. How to apply for ebt?
    • Apply at https://www.getcalfresh.org/
    • If you need help with applying for ebt, you may contact Aggie Compass Basic Needs Center and they can help you out with the application process.
  10. What’s considered to be expensive for a single or double bedroom? What range should I be looking at?
    • For a single room we have seen that your range should be anywhere from $800-$1400, a good maximum can be about $1300 but don't forget to factor in a bit extra for any household bills. For a shared room a range we have seen is anywhere from $600-$1200 a good maximum can be about $800.
  11. Is it possible for someone I know to get into the green if I have priority housing?
    • If you have a roommate who wants to get in and you’ve already been guaranteed, it might be possible for them to be placed with you, be sure to list the same preferences and possibly request them but keep in mind that it is not always guaranteed.
  12. How would I go about looking for housing in advance since I know I’m going to be studying abroad?
    • Possibly sublease if you can’t find a place, depending on when you leave, see if you can find a lease beforehand! If look far enough in advance you might be able to also guarantee your housing for when you come back, it is just a matter of finding something that will be open at that time.
